Drying short lengths v/s long lengths ?

For you SYP mills, has anyone ever experimented with drying 8', 10' , and 12' together in a charge and then drying the longer lengths 14' thru 20' together. What were your results? Does the longer lengths take less time to dry and shorter lengths take longer to dry or vice versa?

We have tried this a little bit. Believe it or not, from my test runs, the short lengths take a little longer to dry. I am not sure if this has to do with many more gaps between cars, or what. We have tried this on Wf, but it is hard because we are so limited on space to store green lumber, we have to load what comes out of the mill to keep up. We have also tried this on our Pine runs, and had a little success, but Just keeping the 8' lumber seperate and loading full charges of 8' has helped alot with our wet drop out %.

That is the same results I have seen in the past too! I am currently testing this further, drying my 8' thru 12' in same charge. I have dried 18' and 20' together and came away with shorter drying times. So we will see if this holds true.
